PROCESS - JAPANESE HAND TOOLS

Jessica Wickham's path to opening a solid wood furniture studio began when she studied the use of traditional Japanese hand tools while living in Tokyo.  The tools are awe-inspiring.  Every hand plane and chisel is hand-made, a collaboration between a blacksmith and a woodworker.  The deceptively simple tool designs are connected to traditions of woodworking culture in Japan that go back hundreds of years.  Mastering the use of Japanese edge tools is a lifetime's work.  Jessica will always be grateful to Toshio Odate, a profound teacher and author whose writings and teachings helped to (begin to) demystify these amazing tools.
